Want a Math project that will tap into your child’s imagination and creativity? Then, “Taking Care of Business” is what you need!
“Taking Care of Business” begins with you and your child taking a drive around the town and take note of businesses in the area. After the drive, have your child use the brainstorm sheet to draw some of the businesses that were seen on the drive around town. Then, your child will brainstorm things that they like to do for fun. These fun hobbies and ideas could turn into a business venture! The next step is to research business ideas for kids. Have your child write down his/her top ten picks and circle the three that interest him/her the most. He/she will have to decide if they want to produce a good or sell a service and come up with a name for his/her new company!
Now the plan gets set in motion. Your child will draw detailed pictures of the goods or services that will be provided by the business, list materials needed, the price to purchase each material and come up with prices to sell each good or service.
Once your child completes the above-mentioned list, he/she will come up with a menu of good or services that he/she will sell at his/her BUSINESS!!! Then, your child will create the products to sell! At WonderHere, our students created their own businesses and the GRAND FINALE of the project was them selling their products to other students, parents and teachers in the Studio! This was such an amazing experience for everyone because we all got to see the many talents of the children. There were homemade pet collars, paintings, finger-knitted yarn animals and a variety of other products.
To see the students’ businesses come to life was PRICELESS! The children enjoyed this project, selling their products and earning real money! Some have the dream of opening these businesses in the future! What a great way to let your child delve deep into his/her interests, plan something that is special, belongs to them and can be brought to life!
