This activity will help your child practice their phonics skills – particularly onset and rime. Onset is the first part of a word before the vowel (like c in cat). Rime is the part of the word that comes after the onset (like at in cat).

What you need:

  • Scissors

How to prep:

  • Cut out the word ending (rime) slips.
  • Cut the two slits (dotted lines) from each rime.
  • Cut out the word beginning (onset) slips.

Directions:

  1. Slide an onset slip through the matching slit and move it up and down, creating different words using onset and rime.
  2. Older children can write down the words they create.
