From a parking lot downtown to a 10 acre farm . . . we are never not grateful when we stop to consider where we have been, how hard it's been to get where we are, and all of the amazing families we are surrounded by today.

Our website literally used to say "not a school" under our name as the tagline 🫣, because the word "school" had become such a bad word for us. As disillusioned former public school teachers heartbroken with the state of the system we had to walk away from, we determined that the learning environment we imagined would look nothing like the one we just left.

Fast-forward 9 years of asking questions, solving problems, trying and trying again . . . we have been busy re/imagining as a team what a school could mean for kids and families if it were something filled-with wonder.

We are so proud of this SCHOOL that we have built, and proud of all the other, different, unique, non-traditional tiny schools popping up all around the nation just to prove to the bigger-badder machine that is the public education system that we can and that we are hear for good.

At our project-based school, we believe the world

At our project-based school, we believe the world around us is such an excellent teacher. Textbooks are cool, but current events often more applicable, more tangible, more interesting. It is with this in mind that we embrace election season, talk respectfully with students about what's going on in their country, and we encourage you to engage in meaningful conversation with your child about elections.

Without fear, but with discernment, empathy, and curiosity- talk about the ideas, firmly held beliefs of all sides, and leave space for questions, opposing views, and discomfort. Sometimes a child's view is truly the most enlightening. Let them lead the conversations.

Meanwhile- enjoy some of our student government campaigning going on at the farm. 😎😍🇺🇸

Sometimes even kids who get to attend school on a farm need a fall-festival kinda farm field trip to get us in the Autumn mood. 🍂

Because education does not stop or start in the cl

Because education does not stop or start in the classroom, but begins and is nurtured within the home . . . we, as parents, need to equip our children with the tools to navigate all of the beauty- as well as the ugly- found in the world that they have access to with the click of a button.

So- we have invited our good friend @maandpamodern to join us in Lakeland this weekend to educate and empower us as parents to lead the way towards bolstering our children's confidence and safety while navigating this digital age.

We did not want cost or space to hinder parents from being in attendance for this workshop this weekend, so this event is free to attended, hosted by the WonderHere Education Foundation, and held in partnership with our local church @accesschurch (south lakeland location). The more structured the learning environment is, t

The more structured the learning environment is, the less space the child has to think for themselves, create something new, question what always was, challenge an accepted idea, solve a nagging problem, wander aimlessly until they happen upon something magical and new.

But, of course, when the teacher steps away from the podium and allows the child in the room voice and choice . . . Collaboration and conspiring of ideas spills out from the rows, agendas shoved aside, and the volume overturns into a busy hum.

Soooo . . . for the sake of all the children in all the classrooms around the world, I wonder which is worse . . . A little bit of chaos or far too much quiet?

Thank you to everyone who came out today to help clear the farm and school after the hurricane. We will be back at it tomorrow, lots to do, but oh so grateful for where we get to live and who we get to do life with! ❤️

Our school model works, because we don't just focus on school. We focus first on the child, then the family, and then everything else . . . Interests, abilities, basic needs, wonders.

When school is more than a school, it's a community, learning isn't the only thing we get out of it. We gain so much more. ❤️

As parents and teachers, we can often be our own w

As parents and teachers, we can often be our own worse enemy when it comes to our kids’ autonomy and creativity. I’ve seen this scene play out in project time again and again… both with my students and my own kids.

🎬 SCENE: Your kid has an interesting question or cool idea and starts right at it… then as their idea progresses you (in all your infinite wisdom 😏) see the potential to take the project in an even BETTER direction. But either your kid is not having it and fights you on it, or they let you take the reigns and it’s no longer their vision. Either way, they’ve lost their full autonomy.

Instead of projecting your ideas onto them, we encourage you to step back and take on the role of “curious observer”. Let them do their thing, and take notes. Help them only with what they ask for help with. At the end of their project time, ask these reflective questions:

✨ What did you accomplish today that you are proud of?
✨ What part of this was hard today?
✨ What is your overall vision for this project?
✨ How do you want your project to look like in the end?
✨ What is a new thing you learned today?
✨ Are you enjoying yourself? Why or why not?
✨ How can I support you?
