This activity will help your child practice their phonics skills – particularly onset and rime. Onset is the first part of a word before the vowel (like c in cat). Rime is the part of the word that comes after the onset (like at in cat).
What you need:
- Scissors
How to prep:
- Cut out the word ending (rime) slips.
- Cut the two slits (dotted lines) from each rime.
- Cut out the word beginning (onset) slips.
Directions:
- Slide an onset slip through the matching slit and move it up and down, creating different words using onset and rime.
- Older children can write down the words they create.
