We value reading for enjoyment and information ove

We value reading for enjoyment and information over reading to prove to an adult that you can.

We also believe "better late than early" as the general rule of thumb for when to begin teaching children to read. We love our friends in Finland (also known as the most literate country in the world) and their golden rule for delaying reading instruction until age 7 when the child is developmentally ready for this skill.

What difference does it make as long as the child is reading? A HUGE difference. Our relationship with reading early on carves out for us how we will always experience text and how we view ourselves as readers as adults.

21% of American adults are illiterate. That staggering statistic in this century and in this country should not be. If you were told at an early age that you had to sit down quietly and decode a text that seemed foreign to you while your little body was telling you to move, play, explore . . . do literally anything other than this thing now . . . How would you develop as a reader? You would always fight it. And that first experience becomes the norm.

American classrooms graduate students who grew up believing reading was boring, hard, and not for them year after year. Same practices yielding the same results. We did this. As a society we pushed our young children too hard in one direction too soon.

At WonderHere, the push stops here. And we graduate lovers of reading every year. 📚

Leading with the child's idea validates that they have valuable things to contribute to their own education, creates space for them to explore their learning capacity, and they then have a built in buy-in to their own lesson because you have stepped back and let them into the driving seat.

We won't always be there to tsk and task .... letting them think as well as learn with you as the mentor (side-by-side rather than on some pedestal) empowers them to keep doing that long after and on their own.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of seeing childhood as something to simply "get through" in order to grow up and face the world. But in truth, childhood is life—a magical time filled with wonder, discovery, and pure joy.

When we think of childhood as just the first chapter before the real story begins, we miss the depth of the experience. It’s a time when children’s imaginations run wild, their hearts are open, and every day is an adventure. The little moments—the laughter, the curiosity, the play—are not just fleeting; they shape who we are and stay with us throughout our lives.

Let’s remember to embrace childhood for what it truly is: a season to be cherished. It’s not just about preparing for what’s ahead, but living in the beautiful, present moment. So, let’s celebrate childhood, not as a stepping stone, but as a vibrant part of life, full of its own special magic.

Between valentines and sweets, we fit in celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr , a quick history lesson on slavery and the civil rights movement, and - if you’re brave - you venture into the waters to discuss current events and racial tension.
