To be clear, we are not against meaningful monitoring of progress and highly value hard work and careful collection of skills like the collecting of stones along the pebbly shore . . . We are vehemently against the nonsense, the paper pushing for the sake of proving something to someone else and the notion that standardizing rigorous learning according to age would ever yield meaningful results- as if working out at the gym with women my own age and being prescribed the same training regardless of my abilities, background, or history would ever be a good idea!

We can do better, so we should. Our children deserve it.

What if going to school was also about making frie

What if going to school was also about making friends, not just collecting information??? Knowing we can learn anywhere, even in isolation, the value of communal learning could be measured in the sum of the relationships that are grown. Maybe then the traditional school would do less shhh-ing and dishing out silent lunches, and instead carve out large stretches of unstructured times where social skills can be developed freely. The health of our children: mentally, socially, emotionally, academically . . . Requires us to make the whole-child a priority, not just the parts that look shiny on test pages.
